How does it work?

Entrepreneurs can enter their EXISTING businesses and stand a chance of winning R100 000 in cash and services to be used for their business. Four runner-ups will each receive R10 000 worth of coaching and training for their businesses.

Step 1: Enter

Enter the competition by entering your name, email address and cell number below. Remember that you can only enter one business per email address, so if you want to enter a second, please use another email address. Maximum two entries per person.

Step 2: Wait for approval

We will review your information and approve within 24 hours. Please check your email for a confirmation email from us once your entry has been approved and confirm that is your email by clicking the link we send you. Remember to check your SPAM folder as well.

Step 3: Share

Once your entry has been approved you can share your profile so others can show their support for you but liking your profile, so why not share with your family, friends and colleagues.

Step 4: Updates

Check the website for regular updates and your email inbox including the number of likes that you have and keep sharing your profile with family and friends. Don’t worry if you don’t get enough likes as this won’t count against you (see FAQs).

Who is the organizer of this Competition?

* The Black Lion is the brainchild of Leon Lategan, the CEO of The Lions Den, which is an entrepreneurial company, involved in numerous businesses, which educate, coach, mentor and support entrepreneurs and business owners.
* The Lions Den also provides products and services to assist entrepreneurs and business owners to grow their businesses.
* Leon was also previously the CEO of Independent Newspapers’ digital division IOL (Independent Online)
* We also run a charity initiative supporting 27 charities: www.mmb.gives.

What is the main purpose of this Competition?

Our purpose is to create, coach and inspire 100 000 black entrepreneurs in the next 12 months to build sustainable businesses, both profitable and remarkable.

What is a Black Lion?

A “Black Lion” is an entrepreneur who is male or female, black, coloured or Indian, an SA resident with an SA bank account, and has an existing business. The definition is the same as that of the Black Economic Empowerment Act of 2003 which states that “black people” is a generic term which means Black Africans, Coloureds and Indians.

The business must be generating an income/profit. This competition is NOT for ideas or NPO’s (non-profit organisations).

Are there any restrictions on who may enter? What does "black" mean?

The entrants need to be black, an SA resident with an SA bank account. Their business must already exist and the entrant must be earning an income/profit from it. This competition is not for “ideas” or NPO’s (non-profit organisations).

For clarification, an individual qualifying as a “Black Lion” has to be Black, Coloured or Indian, as well as a resident in South African.

The definition is the same as that of the Black Economic Empowerment Act of 2003 which states that “black people” is a generic term which means Black Africans, Coloureds and Indians.

How do I enter?

1. Register your business by entering your details here.
2. We will review the information you entered during registration and approve your entry within 24 hours.
3. Once your entry has been approved you will be able to vote for your business and share your profile.

Is there a charge to enter this competition?

There is no entry free.

What future growth is planned?

* The Black Lion wants to attract more black entrepreneurs to become “Black Lions” each year.
* The movement wants to increase the amount of quality entries into the yearly competition.
* The movement wants to introduce entrepreneurial education via online portals.
* The movement wants to establish a “Schools Entrepreneur Investment Fund” to assist students, where relevant and appropriate, in growing their businesses and developing their entrepreneurial skills.

What if someone enters the same type of business?

This is absolutely fine as each business will be reviewed on their own merits, business model and profitability.

What do I do if my registration doesn’t go through?

Please ensure all the necessary information is completed in your entry from before you click “Send”. Be sure to acknowledge that you agree to the terms and conditions. Please ensure your “selfie” pic is less than 10MB (less than 5MB is even better) and that it is in JPG, JPEG or GIF format. Please ensure you have enough airtime/data to upload your pic. If the “choose file” button on your device is not working, rather try registering from a desktop PC or laptop. How can I edit or change information on my entry?

Please click here to login with your email address and password, and then follow the prompts on the screen to edit your profile.

When does the competition start?

23 October – Entries Open

14 Jan – Top 10 announced

Prizes will only be paid out in February – once the winner is announced, payment, coaching and support services will all be discussed and finalized during February 2019.

What are the prizes?

How will the Top 10 including the winner be announced?

The winners will be announced as follows:

Will my details be used for future marketing campaigns?

Your details can be used in future direct marketing campaigns, but only with our direct sponsors and ourselves. They will not be shared with any other 3rd party. You will be given the opportunity to unsubscribe from these campaigns.

How do I delete my entry?

Why should I enter the Competition?

You should enter the competition, if you believe you have a fantastic business and you think the prize money can help you grow your  business.

What are the judges looking for when they evaluate the entries?

* They are looking for original, innovative businesses, that will work in SA and that can possibly scale (grow).
* They are looking to see who did their homework when thinking through the challenges the business may face.

What do I have to submit to enter the Competition?

How will I find out whether I’m a Winner?

You will be officially notified via email as a Winner of the Contest.

Are non-profit businesses eligible for entry?

No. The contest is limited to “for-profit” businesses.

What about the copyright of my information?

The organisers have the sole right to publish the submissions in any media.

Can I submit my entry in my mother tongue or any other language than English?

Entries can only be submitted in English.

Can I submit materials in addition to the entry documents listed on this website?

No, sorry. We know you’re proud of your marketing materials, and you should be. But, this contest is about the brilliance of your business. Your other materials will not be considered during the evaluation of your submissions. Brochures, folders, flyers, photographs, and the like will not be shown to the judges. Only the entry documents listed on this website will be reviewed.

I have registered, but now I can’t find my profile?

Please see our FAQ’s and T&C’s to make sure your entry qualifies. Remember this competition is for EXISTING businesses, not “IDEAS” or NPO’s (non-profit organisations).

Will you advertise my business or profile on your social media pages?

Unfortunately, we do not offer paid advertising opportunities for entrants on our Social Media platforms, as we have many entries and it would be unfair to only advertise specific entries. Your profile and business details are on our website (please share your profile link on your own social media pages) and every entry is featured on our home page, We also randomly select entrants to feature on our social pages. If you mention us in your Instagram story, we often repost to our stories.

I am under 18 years of age, may I still enter?

If you are under 18 and at school or home-schooled, you may NOT enter this competition, but please see our sister initiative here: Scooler

If you are under 18 and NOT enrolled in a school or home-schooled, you MAY enter, but you will need your parent(s)/guardian’s consent to enter the competition.

Does my business need to be registered?

No, your business does not need to be registered, however if you make the finals, you may need to provide proof that you have an existing business.

May I enter more than one business?

Yes, you may, as long as it is a different business altogether (do not enter the same business twice) and you have made sure that all other criteria are met as per our T&C’s. You will need to use a different email address to enter another business.
